Knowing when to pull back on correcting an image is really just based on experience.. Here the client wanted the backdrop to have a real presence in the images, but needed it to be clean enough to not distract from the apparel or the feel of the image as a whole. To address this, I limited what I edited with frequency separation; sometimes it was just removing dark discoloration, but keeping the texture. Sometimes the opposite. The end result gives the authentic look the client wanted, but without the viewers eye being pulled away by imperfections.
